chats falls walleye
June 23, 2009 - The water level has dropped to normal now. Fished for walleye at the Chats Falls dam on a beautiful hot day. They were holding just below the falls in 15 feet of water. Launched the boat at the recently renovated Fitzroy Harbour boat launch. There's a brand new wharf and ramp but the boat launch is still at a useless angle and the wharf is way too high. Someone is going to get hurt there. They should have put in floating docks instead.
Three more days until bass season opens!
Walleye
June 16, 2009 - Another day of buzzbait pikes and jighead walleyes. Killing time 'til bass season.
Water is up high.
pike
June 7, 2009 - This was pike day. 20 to 30 small ones with only two of them over 3lbs. No bigguns. Three big bass but they are still out of season so no pictures, just quickly released.
walleye
June 5, 2009 - Got out for an evening pizza supper in the boat with Cathy and Wes. Three small walleye visited after dinner. Water level is quite high.

March 22, 2009 - The ice is going out three weeks earlier than last year.

November 11 , 2008 - I was going to put the boat away for the season today but decided to go out for one last fish. Pike and walleye were on the bite but couldn't find where the bass were.
November 9 , 2008 - The beavers are busy in Constance Creek. No fish though.
Water level is slightly high and it's very cold.

October 21 , 2008 -CBC Ottawa airs the television interview they did with me out on the river back in September. It's part of a week long series they have produced on the state of the Ottawa river.

October 19 , 2008 - A clear and sunny but chilly fall day with a steady chop on the water. Trees are almost bare of leaves.
Burnie Grant and myself spent the earlier part of the day casting for muskie with no luck. We moved and tried for bass but only caught a few pike.
October 13 , 2008 - Beautiful, warm fall day with no wind. The river was glass.
Spent the morning looking for muskie to no avail. Once the day warmed up I went up shallow for largemouth in the lily pads. I saw two huge schools of minnows in the shallows which were getting a lot of attention from the local predator fish. Pike were on a frenzy and were aggressively hitting every I threw. Made it kind of tough to get through to the bass :)
Nothing big though - largest pike was 4lbs even and largest bass was 2.9lbs.
September 28 , 2008 - See the indent in this largemouth's head? I have seen a couple of other pictures lately from other bass fishermen in our area that show an indent in the nose area too. I wonder what's up?
The water level has come down to more normal levels finally. Largemouth bass were up shallow in the weeds today but the smallmouth were schooled up a point.
September 23 , 2008 - Smallmouth bass have started to school up with the cooling water temperatures. Caught 8 off one small point. Biggest today was this 3.4lbs smallie. Largemouth are hard to find right now. The water is very high.
September 23 , 2008 - The water is very high again. One spillway is wide open at the dam. My dock boards are almost floating away.
September 16 , 2008 - Did interviews out on the river with CBC reporters Nick Gamache (Radio One) and Steve Fischer (News at Six). They are creating a multi-part news story on how important the Ottawa River is to all of us and wanted my thoughts on it from a sport fishing point of view.
To be aired in October on TV and radio.

September 13 and 14, 2008 - George's Marine held their 14th annual Fun & Fish tournament for their Nitro and Tracker boat clients on Golden Lake. Thanks to George, Jeff, Debbie, the rest of the staff and their families who gave up their weekend to host everyone for dinner, derby and then a BBQ at The Sands On Golden Lake Resort. It was a fantastic time and the food was stellar. This was my tenth year attending.
Cathy and I won first with a total weight of 18.7lbs of pike. Our son, Wes, won the kids division with two largemouth bass.

August 15, 2008 - Look at the colour of the trees! This is the middle of August not the end of September. Hope it doesn't mean an early and long winter.
August 10, 2008 - A 4.6 along with a 3.8lbs. largemouth bass topped the day.

August 6, 2008 - The pattern is still very shallow, right at the shore in some cases. Big one of the day is this 4.9lbs. largemouth.
Some of the trees look like they are changing colour already. Very strange for the beginning of August.

July 26, 2008 - This guy was trying to catch the flies off his back. Total frustration but he kept persevering. Kind of like my day fishing today :)
July 22, 2008 - A small funnel cloud coming from the north.
July 22, 2008 - Wes and I took out his buddy Carson for some slop fishing. A 5.2lbs. largemouth was the big one of the day. The high water levels allow getting into areas normally too shallow.
July 20, 2008 - The high water levels continue and the largemouth are up very shallow. Big one today was 5.1lbs.
July 13, 2008 - A decent, 7.5lb. Ottawa River northern pike. Came out of the weeds on a plastic worm. The water is still very high and slightly cool for this time of year.
July 7, 2008 - Got my second muskie of the season. 18.8lbs. Just missed getting a picture of her airbourne with the sunset in the background.
July 6, 2008 - Got my first muskie of the season. Put on a good show. 12.1lbs. Lousy pic because I was alone.
July 2 to 5, 2008 - Wes and I had the whole week off to fish. Water levels are so high the forest is flooded. We found largemouth bass right at the edge of the woods, tucked right into the stumps and branches. Smallmouth were inhabiting the lilypads. Having a lot of fun with gar too. We made a couple of rope lures and had a blast.
July 1, 2008 - Water levels are extremely high and the water is cool. The large bass are huddled up in the warm water of back bays, away from the current. If you see gar, there will be largemouth bass too.
Winter, 2007 - No Monsters but lots of walleye, pike and perch. Didn't use any live bait this season, only plastic baits.
October 1 & 3, 2007 - Spent two days fishing a couple of small lakes west of the city. Caught a ton of bass but nothing over 3 lbs. Both lakes offered acres of stumps and logs which held multitudes of largemouth bass. Big plastic tubes seemed to be the choice bait each day.
Tuesday October 2, 2007 - First cast of the day gets the big one of the week; a 5.8 lb largemouth bass from the Ottawa River. A spinner bait got it along with several other quality bass that day. Still lots of weeds out there and the water is warmer than what one would expect for this time of year.
September 8 & 9, 2007 - Georges Marine holds their annual Nitro / Tracker fishing tournament on Golden Lake. Cathy and I took second place in the pike division with a total of 21 lbs. Missed first place by .9 of a pound.
Our son Wes placed second in the children's bass division.
Sunday September 2, 2007 - A nice little Ottawa River muskie. Only 13 lbs but strong and acrobatic.
Tuesday August 28, 2007 - Another 4.7lb largemouth is big bass of the week.
Tuesday August 21, 2007 - 4.7lb largemouth is the big bass for this week.
Sunday July 15, 2007 - 4.9lb largemouth is this week's big bass.
Sunday January 7, 2007 - Global warming? Normally I would be ice fishing at this point of the winter but people are out water skiing today!
